Proofreading and Editing for Scholars

“You might not write well every day, but you can always edit a bad page. You cannot edit a blank page.”
Jody Picoult

My editing and proofreading is done by me. It is not done by a programmed application which cannot tell the difference between a stylistic feature and a grammatical error! I do however use AI to make sure that there are no extra spaces between words, no duplicated dots and other such diacritical diktat.

While British English conventions are my default setting, I also ably edit America documents using the associated spelling and punctuation rules.

You can choose to have your document edited directly, which means that I read through it, make changes and then send it back to you without any further action required of yourself. This is the cheapest option and reserved for business and personal documents. The reason for this is that if a student submits an assignment, piece of homework or dissertation for editing and I just go ahead and make changes… the student will not learn from their mistakes. Sorry, but this is the teacher in me. That being said – my students who take my comments on-board and learnt from their mistakes have shown the most remarkable academic progress.

The second option is for me to suggest edits. This involves me reading through the document and making comments in the margin on what is great/good/needs work. Furthermore, anything that could be improved is given a suggestion on what to change it to or how to change it (also in the margin).
